Cartwright Lane is a dead-end street of about 1,140 feet north of Lexington Road, east of Friendship Street. It begins where John F Allan Drive, which comes up from Lexington Road, meets Ponderosa Drive, and runs north to a turnaround. The three streets were laid out together on the "Definitive Subdivision Plan of Land, 'Lexington Hills,' Billerica, Ma.," dated May 27, 1986 and revised September 18, 1986, drawn by Visniewski Engineering Associates, Inc., civil engineers and land surveyors, of Chelmsford for the applicant and owner, H. J. Allan, Inc., of 32 Lexington Road. The Planning Board approved it on October 2, 1986, and it was recorded on October 7, 1986 (Plan Book 156, Plan 36). Cartwright Lane was drawn with a variable width, 40 feet at the least, and lined with house lots of about 40,000 square feet. The same family company had developed Lexington Farms, on the other side of Lexington Road, in 1984.
H. J. Allan, Inc. sold the lots with new houses from about 1989 to 1992, and the assessors date most of the houses to 1989 and 1990, with a few later ones. In 1999 the Planning Board asked the annual town meeting for $10,000 "to construct sidewalks on Cartwright Lane and Ponderosa Drive," but on May 11, 1999 the article was dismissed unanimously. No vote accepting Cartwright Lane as a public way has been found. The plan does not explain the street names, and the origin of the name Cartwright was not found.
